On 27 August 2023 a rockslide (about 15,000 m³ of rock, later joined by another 5,000 m³) at the La Praz cliff in the Maurienne Valley buried a tunnel and damaged the railway between Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Modane/Oulx – the main rail link between France and Italy via the Fréjus base tunnel. After roughly 19 months of slope stabilisation (including 3 km of anchor rods and extensive mesh netting) and track reconstruction, SNCF resumed through Paris–Turin/Milan services on 31 March 2025, with Trenitalia following on 1 April 2025.
