A Swedish company is laying a new fibre-optic cable from Gotland via Saaremaa and Hiiumaa to the Estonian mainland and on through Harju County to Helsinki: about 250 km on land (Haapsalu-Viimsi) and about 300 km under water. Costs are about €40m, of which €15.7m comes from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility Digital programme; laying is planned for this and next year and entry into service for 2027. 31 Dec 2027 is a placeholder; announced on 21 Oct 2026 (ERR, 21 Oct 2026).
