CNMC orders Renfe to open La Sagra workshop to rival Iryo

The competition authority CNMC obliges Renfe to open its heavy-maintenance workshops, above all the La Sagra base, to competing operators such as Iryo; Renfe challenges the decision before the National Court (report of 21 May 2026)

Renfe puts the loss of revenue at over €60 million a year and expects fewer trains in service, especially on Madrid–Barcelona and on Avant services; by its calculation it would have to give up more than 10% of capacity a year rather than 7%.

According to Renfe, the CNMC demands unrestricted access to La Sagra for removing and refitting bogies, use of its facilities and equipment, and repair of the bogies by Renfe or by the competitor itself, with economic terms and deadlines, while it rejected Iryo's actual request for access to a maintenance pit. Renfe argues that the Railway Act requires access only for light maintenance and points to its 2025–2030 workshop programme worth over €1 billion and a €43 million tender for a maintenance base in Móstoles. The date is that of the report; the article does not say when the CNMC decided (LOK Report, 21 May 2026).
