German manufacturer Herrenknecht AG supplied the purpose-built Mixshield TBM (13.66 m diameter) used for the 3.34 km core section beneath the Bosphorus. In addition, the European Investment Bank (EIB, USD 350 million) and the EBRD (USD 150 million) co-financed the USD 1.4 billion project; Deutsche Bank provided a hedging facility. UK-based Arup Group conducted technical studies, and French firm Egis Group operates the tunnel under the 29-year concession.
The Eurasia Tunnel is a 5.4 km double-deck road tunnel beneath the Bosphorus, opened 20 December 2016, connecting Istanbul's European and Asian sides. It was built by the Turkish-South Korean ATAŞ consortium (Yapı Merkezi / SK E&C); German firm Herrenknecht AG supplied the specialized TBM for the underwater section. The EIB and EBRD together contributed USD 500 million in financing, giving the project documented European involvement in both industry and finance.
