Anglian Water, through its @one Alliance, has appointed civil engineering and infrastructure firm Barhale as principal contractor for an £18M stormwater retention scheme at the Walton-on-the-Naze terminal pumping station in Essex. The 5,000m³ storm tank uses a pill-shaped footprint to avoid an existing aquifer and sewer and will be built with a diaphragm wall, excavated from within. An 84m, 1,200mm pipeline built by microtunnelling connects it to the existing storm tank. Investigations by the Environment Agency and Anglian Water had identified the need for extra storage so that capacity at the sewage pumping station is not overwhelmed in extreme weather. Announced on 04.08.2026; according to the source, completion is scheduled for November 2027, with 30.11.2027 used as a placeholder for that month (New Civil Engineer, 04.08.2026).
