The 125 km Salamanca–Fuentes de Oñoro section is being electrified to complete the Madrid–Lisbon rail link; the remaining stretch from Medina del Campo has been electrified since December 2015. Awarded in 2018 for EUR 31.7 million with completion originally planned for 2019, the project has been repeatedly delayed (tunnel and viaduct issues among others), its execution period extended from 18 to 102 months, and its budget raised to about EUR 34.9 million. According to Adif and regional press (as of June 2026), the new deadline runs to July 2026, with works in their final phase undergoing voltage and safety tests ahead of regulatory approval. Update (05.06.2026): Adif extended the execution period to 102 months and raised the budget by around €0.55m; according to Salamancahoy the works could be completed in the remainder of the year, followed by approval from the railway safety agency AESF. Announced on 04.06.2026; the date 31.12.2026 is a placeholder for the end of the year (Salamancahoy, 05.06.2026).
