Moldova's Constitutional Court strikes down rules for vetting judges and prosecutors

- Event
- On 15 Oct 2026 the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova declares provisions on the external evaluation of judges and prosecutors unconstitutional
The provisions allowed parliament to appoint members of the evaluation commissions with only 51 instead of 61 votes
On 5 Mar 2026 parliament had lowered the majority needed to appoint commission members from 61 to 51 votes after it had previously lacked the votes to appoint the Dutch jurist Herman von Hebel; on 6 Mar von Hebel and Bernard Lavigne were appointed with 53 votes of the governing PAS party to the commission evaluating prosecutors. The ruling concerns Laws No. 65/2023 and No. 252/2023; the source does not say what it means for the two appointments (Logos Press, 15 Oct 2026).
