The 172 km Basque Y links the three Basque cities of Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz and San Sebastián via a new Y-shaped high-speed line designed for 220-240 km/h; due to mountainous terrain, 61% of the route (104.3 km) runs through 80 tunnels. The European Investment Bank committed EUR 1bn in financing in 2012. The opening date has been repeatedly delayed (originally 2017, then 2023) and was, as of February 2024, expected in 2027; the extension into France (Hendaye) via Irun is not planned before 2032.
