Portugal reactivates Contumil–Leça do Balio railway line

The 18.9 km line reopened for passenger service between Contumil and Leça do Balio on 9 February 2025, after a 14-year hiatus (last passenger service in January 2011). The roughly EUR 32 million investment included replacing a bridge over the Leça river, removing four level crossings, and upgrading the track for freight trains up to 750 m long; on weekdays 60 passenger trains now run per day. The final stretch to the port of Leixões has been served by a replacement bus since March 2025.
