Bilbao Metro's new Line 5 converts an existing Euskotren railway into a metro line, linking Sarratu station (Basauri, interchange with Line 1) via Aperribai, Bengoetxe and Galdakao to Usansolo Hospital, with roughly 6.3 km of main tunnel. Construction of the first three sections was awarded in late 2022 for EUR 240 million, and press reports from early 2026 indicate about 20% of the main tunnel had already been excavated. Opening of the Sarratu–Galdakao section is planned for 2027, with full connection to the Euskotren network following by 2029.
