The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is planned to be extended from the Beckton branch via a new Beckton Riverside station and a tunnel under the Thames to Thamesmead (Royal Borough of Greenwich), adding roughly 3 km of new track and two new stations. As of February 2026 the cost is estimated at around £1.62 billion (earlier estimates ranged from £700 million to £1.2 billion); in November 2025 HM Treasury approved TfL and the Greater London Authority to borrow the funds required. Construction could start in 2029, with opening targeted for the early 2030s; the extension is intended to enable roughly 25,000-30,000 new homes in the surrounding development areas.
