EU Council gives final approval to modernised trade agreement with Mexico

With the Council decision of 14 July the Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) is concluded on the EU side: most remaining tariffs (up to 45% on cheese and pork) will be eliminated, 568 EU geographical indications protected, and access to services, public procurement and critical raw materials improved.

Final internal EU step after signature on 22 May and Parliament consent on 8 July 2026 (official Council press release of 14 July); entry into force on the first day of the second month after mutual notification, with Mexico's ratification expected after the summer. Part of the EU's trade diversification strategy.
