The 61 km Nijmegen–Venlo railway (via Boxmeer and Venray), currently single-track and diesel-operated (Arriva), is the northern section of the Maaslijn (Nijmegen–Roermond, about 80 km, roughly 22,000 passengers/day), which is being fully electrified and partially double-tracked. After a 2022 construction halt due to war-related material cost increases, work (contractor Swietelsky Rail Benelux) has been underway since 2025; per ProRail the Nijmegen–Venlo section is targeted for completion in summer 2027, with the southern Venlo–Roermond section following by November 2027. This sourced completion date differs from the originally assumed 2028-12-31 and has been corrected accordingly.
