On 27.10.2026 the European Commission approves Austrian state aid of EUR 319m for upgrading Infineon's Villach plant to volume production of power GaN chips on 300 mm wafers

It would be the first fab in the EU making power GaN on 300 mm; Infineon must give start-ups, universities and research bodies access and share possible extra profits with Austria

The Commission cleared a €319m direct grant that Infineon Technologies Austria will use for its Villach 'Empowering Fab' project, moving power GaN devices from 200 mm to 300 mm wafers, a first in the EU. Conditions include cooperation with start-ups and research bodies and sharing unexpectedly high profits with Austria (European Commission, Daily News 27.10.2026).
