ÖBB is electrifying the Mattigtalbahn: from the 2027/28 timetable change, trains on the Steindorf bei Straßwalchen – Braunau section are to run on green power from the overhead line. Since 2022 all level crossings on the line have been secured or closed; on 1 June 2026 the Stallhofnerstraße crossing in Mattighofen, the last one without technical protection, was closed, and on the Friedburg–Braunau section 63 crossings have been modernised or closed in total. The closure of the Friedburg–Braunau am Inn line for the catenary installation was scheduled for 13 July to 4 September 2026, and ÖBB says the works are on schedule; the state of Upper Austria is meanwhile building the Mattighofen bypass with the new Stallhofen overpass, due to open to traffic at the end of 2026. The date is a placeholder: the article gives only the 2027/28 timetable change, so the end of 2027 is used. (LOK Report, 2 Jun 2026)
