Bellinzona's SBB railway station underwent comprehensive modernization and expansion between 2014 and 2016 at a cost of CHF 36 million, including a new entrance hall, lengthened and raised platforms, a new underpass, and barrier-free access. The station was officially inaugurated as "Porta del Ticino" on 14 October 2016, in time for the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in December 2016.
