Event
On 22 Oct 2026 the government of the Canton of Schaffhausen decides an amendment of the energy ordinance adding water and greenhouse-gas efficiency requirements for data centres

The amendment takes effect on 1 Dec 2026; previously only an energy-efficiency limit applied. The government backs a levy on electricity and water for heavy users, which is not yet decided

The trigger is a motion on the use of building land that the cantonal parliament passed in June 2026, plus public and political concerns. The new limits are meant to encourage economical use of resources and of waste heat; the articles read give no numerical values. The planned levy per kWh of electricity and per cubic metre of water is so far only a committee proposal of 7 Sept 2026 (Baublatt, 22 Oct 2026; second source: Netzwoche, 23 Oct 2026).
