The planned underground four-track through station, with two 420-metre-long central platforms, is designed to replace Lucerne's current terminus and allow trains to pass through without reversing direction; it connects via the Dreilinden tunnel (Ebikon–Schweizerhofquai), a crossing beneath Lake Lucerne, and the Neustadt tunnel. Total costs are estimated at roughly CHF 3.3 billion, of which about CHF 1.8 billion covers the first construction stage; the Swiss parliament approved project planning in 2019 as part of the 2035 rail expansion step, with the detailed planning application due by 2026. Construction is expected to start around 2030, with commissioning targeted for around 2040.
