SBB builds new maintenance plant in Arbedo-Castione on schedule

SBB is building a competence centre for digitalised rail maintenance at Arbedo-Castione for around CHF 755m — one of its largest projects south of the Alps. A year after the foundation stone was laid, SBB reported on 24 July 2026 that construction is on schedule; opening is planned for mid-2028, after which activities will be relocated step by step. The plant will maintain the Giruno, Astoro and TILO Flirt fleets as well as older locomotives, and is designed for 360 staff and 80 apprentices.
