Swissgrid is upgrading the existing 106 km, 220 kV line between the Bickigen (BE) and Chippis (VS) substations to 380 kV to allow Valais hydropower to be fully transported to the Swiss Mittelland; over 294 of the 297 pylons are being reinforced and some raised by up to 6 metres. Following planning approval in 2022, a remand by the Federal Administrative Court (January 2024) requiring additional noise-reduction review, and a renewed approval in September 2025, an appeal is currently pending. Swissgrid now expects commissioning in 2031 — significantly later than the 2027 date originally listed.
