Austrian Power Grid has been renewing the Ernsthofen substation in the Amstetten district, one of the key nodes of Austria's extra-high-voltage grid, since 2017 while it stays in operation: the 110 kV installation was modernised at the end of 2022, two new 220/110 kV large transformers entered service in 2022 and 2023, and the 220 kV switchgear is now being renewed. In October 2025 the two parts of a phase-shifting transformer arrived by rail from Tauern (242 t and 253 t, 600 MVA each), designed to redirect power flows and avoid grid bottlenecks. The project costs about EUR 150 million, and ten large transformers will operate on site once it is finished. The date is a placeholder: the article gives only the year 2029 for project completion.
