Swissgrid is replacing the existing 220 kV line between Niederwil (AG) and Obfelden (ZH) with a new 380 kV line of about 18.6 km, including 4.4 km of underground cable through the protected Reuss valley landscape, using 35 new steel lattice masts instead of the current 49. Costs are estimated at approx. CHF 97 million; the planning approval application was filed in early October 2025, with public consultation scheduled for February/March 2026. Construction is planned to start mid-2028, with commissioning of the new line expected in 2031/2032 (the source list originally noted 2028 as the date).
