Electrification of the Meråker Line between Trondheim and Storlien (the Norway–Sweden border) began in 2023; the overhead line was energized in November 2025 and work was completed in December 2025. The overarching project (including the Trønder Line, about 120 km in total) cost roughly NOK 2.4 billion. It is the first newly electrified rail line in Trøndelag since the Dovre Line in 1970, with new electric Class 73/76 trainsets replacing the previous diesel units. Update (20 Mar 2026): On 31 October 2025 Bane NOR announced that the new high-voltage system between Eidum and the national border would go into operation on 1 November 2025, but a landslide between Hell and Gudå on 7 November 2025 closed the line and delayed electric operation on the Hell–Storlien section (between Trondheim and Hell it was scheduled from 15 December 2025). According to Bane NOR (report of 20 March 2026), the Meråkerbanen resumes operation on 23 March 2026 after extensive rock-securing work; because of reduced speed through the slide section SJ will run trains again only from 13 April 2026, with buses until then. Under a decision of the Railway Directorate (Jernbanedirektoratet, report of 13 November 2025), SJ Norge continues to run two train pairs a day on Trondheim–Storlien until 2028, using bimodal Type 76 trains instead of the diesel Type 93; no direct trains to Stockholm will be ordered, as they would be too expensive relative to the market potential.
