On 16 July 2026 the Swedish government approved continued build-out of the Hästliden onshore wind farm in the Markbygden area around 20 km west of Piteå: a maximum of 85 turbines up to 300 m in total height across roughly 6,800 hectares of forest, with total capacity of about 600 MW depending on grid capacity. The permit replaces an earlier one capped at 200 m, allowing fewer but more powerful turbines. The operator is Norwegian state group Statkraft, which took over Svevind's Markbygden activities in 2023 and puts annual output at around 2 TWh — some 20% of current electricity consumption in price zone SE1 (second source: Statkraft Sverige).
