Announced on 12 February 2026: under the S-Bahn Wien Upgrade programme, ÖBB is renewing Vienna's S-Bahn trunk line (Stammstrecke) so that longer trains and a more capable service become possible; the programme is due to finish by the end of 2027. After two summer closures, a further one between Praterstern and Floridsdorf was planned for 4 July to 6 September 2026, to be followed from 7 September 2026 by a 14-month main closure between the central station and Praterstern until the end of October 2027, during which viaducts and cutting walls are renewed. ÖBB and Wiener Linien worked out a replacement concept with the ÖIR institute, and the City Airport Train runs buses (up to five an hour) between Wien Mitte and the airport in the meantime. The date is a placeholder: ÖBB gives only the end of 2027 for the programme, and no cost is stated (LOK Report, 12 and 13 Feb 2026).
