The roughly 12 km double-track section between Pistoia and Montecatini Terme on the Florence–Pistoia–Viareggio line entered service on 15 September 2025, after construction was completed on 7 September and a week of test operations. The centerpiece is the new 1,670 m Serravalle tunnel; 12 level crossings were also eliminated. The project cost EUR 337 million (including EUR 35 million from the Tuscany Region); over 30% of Florence connections now terminate at Montecatini Terme instead of Pistoia, and a new express train pair between Florence and Viareggio runs in just over one hour.
