The roughly 19 km four-track expansion between the Schaftenau junction (Langkampfen) and the Radfeld node is part of the Brenner Northern Approach between Kufstein and Innsbruck; the route runs through several tunnels and cut-and-cover sections alongside the Inntal motorway (A12). The environmental impact assessment became legally binding in November 2021, and ÖBB-Infrastruktur currently lists the project status as "in planning". According to ÖBB, commissioning is now expected in 2039 rather than the 2034 milestone originally listed.
