Infrabel completed the ETCS master plan on 15 December 2025: the entire main rail network of about 6,399 km is now fitted with ETCS, the European train control system, and Belgium is the second country in Europe, after Luxembourg, to be fully equipped. The programme, launched after the 2010 Buizingen rail accident, ran for ten years, involved up to 1,500 staff and cost about EUR 2.8 billion, including about EUR 100 million in Connecting Europe Facility grants. Since 2015, Siemens Mobility and Equans, together with Infrabel, have upgraded a total of 2,274 track-kilometres to ETCS Level 2, including 46 interlockings, 37 radio block centres and about 4,536 signals; rolling stock is due to follow by December 2027 under a royal decree.
