According to ÖBB, the 66-kilometre upgrade of the Nordbahn line between Wien Süßenbrunn and the Czech border at Bernhardsthal has been under construction since 2022 and covers nine stations and ten stops, 17 of which are being made barrier-free. Goals include a denser suburban-rail (S-Bahn) schedule between Vienna and Gänserndorf, the elimination of level crossings, and shorter travel times to Břeclav (about 45 minutes) and Prague (about 3 hours 45 minutes) as part of the Baltic-Adriatic and Orient/East-Med TEN-T core network corridors. Overall completion is targeted for 2030 per the project list, while the southern section to Gänserndorf is already aimed for 2026; ÖBB does not publicly state a specific investment figure.
