- Netherlands deploys crisis legislation against electricity grid congestion — single appeal instance, substation permits dropped
Thousands of businesses and organisations waiting for a new or larger grid connection are affected. From 1 October 2026, objections to grid expansion projects go through a single instance with a maximum six-month decision period, certain permits for high-voltage substations are dropped and power grids are exempted from nitrogen permits. The aim is to halve connection times for housing and business development.
Adopted by the cabinet on 11 September 2026 and announced by Prime Minister Rob Jetten after the cabinet meeting; modelled on the earlier Dutch Crisis and Recovery Act. Use of the grid's emergency reserve capacity and demand shifting are additional measures.
