On 25 January 2025 the extension of Florence's T2 tram line, known as VACS (Variante Alternativa al Centro Storico), opened, extending the route from Fortezza/Lavagnini to Piazza San Marco (San Marco Università stop) by about 2.5 km with six new stops. This connects Peretola Airport to the historic city centre in roughly 35 minutes, bringing the full line to 7.8 km. Construction started in summer 2023; the line is operated by Gest (a RATP Dev subsidiary), with about 3.4 million additional annual passengers expected. No specific investment figure was found in the available sources.
