The 57 km Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world's longest railway tunnel, connects Erstfeld (canton of Uri) with Bodio (canton of Ticino) and had its ceremonial inauguration on 1 June 2016, with public open-house days and passenger rides at both portals on 4-5 June 2016. Construction costs totaled roughly CHF 12.2 billion. Stress tests during trial operation ran from August to November 2016, before scheduled passenger service began with the timetable change on 11 December 2016 (freight service had already started on 5 September 2016).
