On 26 June 2026 the Swedish government adopts the ordinance under which regions can halve monthly pass prices in local public transport from 1 July 2026 and receive state compensation for the lost revenue

SEK 6.5 billion (EUR 600 million) is available; monthly passes cost only 50% of the price set on 1 May 2026 until 31 December 2026, including trips into the first fare zone of a neighbouring country. According to the government the trigger is the sharp rise in fuel prices after the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz; the environmental protection agency checks and pays out the grant.

On 26 June 2026 the government adopted the ordinance implementing the halving of monthly public transport pass prices: regional transport authorities that sell monthly passes between 1 July and 31 December 2026 at half the price set on 1 May 2026 receive state compensation for lost revenue, based on the number of discounted passes actually sold. SEK 6.5 billion (EUR 600 million) is available, the environmental protection agency checks and pays out the grant, and the reduced fare applies nationwide and in the first fare zone of a neighbouring country, for example for commuters to Copenhagen. The trigger is the sharp rise in fuel prices after the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, to which the government had already responded with lower taxes on petrol and diesel.
