Terzo Valico is a new, roughly 53 km railway line between Milan and Genoa, about 70% running through tunnels (core section: the 27 km Valico Tunnel), improving the connection between the port of Genoa and the European rail network; designed for freight trains carrying semi-trailers and High-Cube containers at up to 250 km/h. Per Italian press reports, around 95.7% of tunnel excavation was complete by mid-2026 (about 5,000 workers, 430 companies); completion originally planned for 2026 has been pushed by Italy's transport ministry to late 2027/early 2028.
