SBB builds second track between Cadenazzo and the Ticino river

Between Contone and the railway bridge over the Ticino river (Cadenazzo–Locarno line), SBB is building about 1,380 metres of continuous second track; the switches south of Cadenazzo were already renewed in 2022. Actual construction has been underway since autumn 2024: the double track is due to enter service by end of 2026, with the new "Monda" road underpass replacing two level crossings following in summer 2027. The project enables a 15-minute service between Bellinzona and Locarno; investment is about CHF 75 million, fully funded by the federal PROSIFF programme (2025 expansion step).
