As part of SBB's Léman 2030 project, Geneva Cornavin station is being expanded with a new underground platform track for trains between Geneva Airport and Lausanne, via a 5.5 km tunnel section from Jardin botanique to Vernier. Construction is planned to start in 2026, with commissioning targeted for 2034. The estimated cost of around CHF 1.829 billion (2022) is financed mainly by the Swiss Confederation (CHF 1.386 billion), the Canton of Geneva (CHF 319 million) and the City of Geneva (CHF 124 million); an earlier, cheaper above-ground expansion plan was previously dropped following citizen opposition (a petition with roughly 16,300 signatures).
