- Sweden presents new minerals strategy — declares access to metals a security policy matter
The strategy bundles measures across eight areas: streamlined permitting, sustainable access to land and water, economic security and preparedness, international cooperation, attractiveness for prospecting and mine development, research investment, greater resource efficiency and recycling, and public acceptance. The Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) is tasked with monitoring progress towards the objectives.
On 23 July 2026 the Swedish government presented a strategy for a 'growing fossil-free and technology-leading mineral and recycling industry'. Energy and Industry Minister Ebba Busch framed the move in security terms, arguing that access to metals is no longer merely economic policy. The press release names no specific funding amounts or new agency; implementation is to run through existing instruments and the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU). Sweden is the EU's largest iron ore producer and hosts several critical raw material deposits.
