Ferrovie della Calabria opens narrow-gauge metro in Catanzaro

The Metro FC of Ferrovie della Calabria between Catanzaro Lido and Catanzaro Città has been in operation since 31 December 2025: first as a free trial service on New Year's Eve, then from 2 January 2026 in regular service, for now on weekdays only and on an interim timetable. On the Catanzaro Lido–Catanzaro Sala section, a new 8.5 km double-track line (950 mm gauge) replaces the single-track route closed in 2022; there are also numerous new stations, one of them underground, and Stadler railcars. Line C to the university hospital is due in 2026, and the 112 km Catanzaro–Cosenza line is to be fully reopened by 31 December 2026 (modernisation about EUR 400 million). (LOK Report, 2 Feb 2026)
