As part of SBB's «Léman 2030» project, Lausanne railway station is being comprehensively rebuilt: platforms are being lengthened to 420 metres and widened to accommodate 400-metre trains, the number of pedestrian underpasses is being increased from two to three (widened by 3.5 metres), and retail space is being expanded from 2,500 to 10,000 m². The station renovation plus a fourth track between Lausanne and Renens are budgeted at CHF 1.2 billion, with a further CHF 250 million added in December 2023 due to delays; completion has slipped from the original 2025 target to no earlier than 2037. The planned connection of the new m3 metro line to the station still depends on approval by the Canton of Vaud's authorities and voters.
