East Link (Ostlänken) is an approximately 160 km double-track new railway line between Järna, south of Stockholm, and Linköping, designed for speeds of 250 km/h with intermediate stops including Norrköping. Official construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony on 6 November 2024, with further sections to follow in stages from 2025. Cost estimates range from roughly SEK 42 to 54 billion depending on source and planning stage; opening is planned for 2035. Update (16 Feb 2026): On 13 February 2026 Trafikverket awarded the general-contractor contracts for two Ostlänken sections totalling about 60 km, part of the 160 km new line between Järna and Linköping. The Vagnhärad section goes to the Swedish branch of Hochtief for SEK 9.5 billion (about EUR 900 million, normal price) and the Skavsta section to Bouygues Travaux Publics for SEK 12.0 billion (about EUR 1.1 billion); the works comprise double-track line, partly on embankments, partly over bridges or through tunnels, between Gerstaberg and Skavsta, plus a new travel centre at Vagnhärad. Completion of both sections is planned for around 2035; these are the agency's first awards using early supplier collaboration, which underpins six of the programme's eleven construction contracts.
