Swissgrid is upgrading and reinforcing the roughly 27 km extra-high-voltage line between Innertkirchen (Bern) and Ulrichen (Valais) across the Grimsel Pass, raising the voltage from 220 to 380 kV. In February 2023 the Federal Council set a planning corridor with largely underground cabling over about 23 km between Innertkirchen and Oberwald (main option: cable tunnel; alternative: cable gallery parallel to the Grimsel rail tunnel). Per Swissgrid's schedule, tendering and construction run until Q4 2033, with commissioning planned by 2040 at the latest — later than the originally listed target year of 2034.
