Event
On 17 Jul 2026 the European Commission publishes its 2026 Rule of Law Report with a largely critical assessment of reforms in Malta

Of seven recommendations assessed, the Commission sees no progress on three, limited progress on three and some progress on one, the governance of public service media

Criticism centres on the lack of final judgments in high-level corruption cases, a large court backlog and the fact that only four magistrates handle complex preliminary inquiries. The details rest on The Shift News's summary of the report; the report itself has not been read (The Shift News, 17 Jul 2026).
