Swissgrid is replacing the existing 220 kV line between Innertkirchen (BE) and Mettlen (municipality of Eschenbach, LU) with a roughly 61 km line rated for 380 kV, combining overhead sections with a roughly 12 km underground cable tunnel through the Glaubenberg (between Erdbrust/Giswil OW and Gfellen/Entlebuch LU). The federal sectoral planning procedure has been running since 2023 and is due to conclude by mid-2026; in November 2025 the Federal Office of Energy's steering group recommended a planning corridor, and public consultation documents have been available since 21 November 2025. Per the schedule, project planning and approval run until 2031, construction takes place 2032-2037, with dismantling of the old line in 2038.
