The roughly 2.8 km double-track railway tunnel beneath central Varberg is part of a 9 km double-track upgrade of the Västkustbanan (West Coast Line) between Varberg and Hamra. Construction began on 19 December 2019. Regular train service through the tunnel and the new Varberg station started on 14 July 2025 (the station itself opened on 13 July), after ten level crossings were replaced by five new bridges. The project aims to increase capacity for passenger and freight traffic, improve safety, and support urban development; final project completion (demolition of the old line) is scheduled for 2026.
