Italy extends diesel discount, speeds energy permits by decree

Haulage companies and consumers benefit from a diesel price cut of 17 cents a litre extended to 17 September 2026, plus a continued tax credit for transport firms. The government can also appoint special commissioners to complete permitting for strategic energy infrastructure (including hydrocarbon exploration) where regional approval is lacking.

Decree-law No. 157 of 10 September 2026, approved by the Council of Ministers (communiqué no. 187) under Prime Minister Meloni in response to persistently high energy prices linked to the Middle East crisis; must be converted into law by parliament within 60 days.
