SBB to build 4-metre freight corridor in Basel for CHF 114m by 2029
- Location
- Basel (line section between St. Johann and SBB stations) · 🇨🇭 Switzerland
- Project
- Clearance upgrade for the 4-metre corridor and maintenance of the Basel St. Johann–Basel SBB line (Kannenfeld and Schützenmatt tunnels, Birsig bridges)
- Investment
- approx. CHF 114 million (of which CHF 7 million for the Birsig bridges, funded via the performance agreement)
- Status
- Under construction (preparatory works under way, main works from April 2026)
Since 16 December 2025 the BAV's plan approval for the main works on the 4-metre corridor between Basel St. Johann and Basel SBB has been in place; SBB will lower the tracks in the Kannenfeld and Schützenmatt tunnels and under two road overbridges by about half a metre and also repair two bridges over the Birsig. The works in Switzerland cost about CHF 114 million; the first part of the preparatory works is already under way, the second starts in January 2026, and the main works are planned from April 2026 until probably the end of 2029. The aim is to turn the left-bank line via France into an additional NEAT access route for semi-trailers with a 4 m corner height, which still requires clearance work on the French side (declaration of intent of February 2025); until the end of 2029 a few trains a day between Basel and Alsace are cancelled, and seven full weekend closures are planned for 2026. Announced on 17 December 2025; the date is a placeholder: only the end of 2029 is given. (LOK Report, 17 Dec 2025)
