· Transport / rail

Location
Zalaszentiván, Zala region (Transdanubia), Baltic–Adriatic freight corridor · 🇭🇺 Hungary
Project
Zalaszentiván delta link (bypass): direct rail connection Szombathely–Zalaegerszeg with new Szentivánvölgy station
Investment
approx. EUR 33 million (HUF 12 billion)
Status
Under construction, opening expected in early 2028

Announced on 5 August 2026: construction is starting at Zalaszentiván on a 1,500 m electrified connecting track (delta line) that will let trains between Szombathely and Zalaegerszeg run without reversing; GYSEV is delivering the project for about EUR 33 million (HUF 12 billion) on behalf of the transport ministry with EU and Hungarian funds, and operation is due to start in early 2028. A new Szentivánvölgy station closer to the town centre is part of the scheme; the line lies on the Baltic–Adriatic freight corridor, where freight trains also have to reverse at Zalaszentiván today, and its south-western end is to give a direct link to the planned intermodal container terminal near Zalaegerszeg. The date is a placeholder: the article gives only early 2028, and the end of the first quarter (31 March 2028) is used. (LOK Report, 5 Aug 2026)
