The roughly 8.35 km underground high-speed bypass tunnel ("Passante AV") together with the new Foster + Partners/Ove Arup-designed underground Belfiore station (approx. 45,000 m² floor area, 4 platforms, up to 25 m below street level) connects Florence to the Milan-Rome high-speed line without interfering with regional traffic. As of July 2026, about 60% of mechanical excavation is complete and the tunnel boring machines Iris and Marika have reached the future station. Project owner RFI expects construction to finish by end of 2029, with commissioning in 2030 (earlier plans had targeted late 2027 / early 2028).
