At the eastern approach to Bern station in the Wylerfeld area, the Olten-Bern, Biel-Bern and Thun-Bern lines used to cross at grade, causing conflicts among roughly 900 daily trains. A new roughly 300-metre single-track grade-separation structure now lets trains cross on different levels; costs were estimated at around CHF 270 million. The project entered service on 12 September 2022 and enabled new direct connections such as Zurich Airport-Interlaken starting December 2022.
