Swissgrid is replacing the existing 220 kV line with a roughly 66 km double-circuit connection between All'Acqua in the Bedretto Valley and Magadino, including over 30 km of underground cable sections (e.g. between Cavergno and Lodano and on the slope near Riazzino) — a record for Switzerland. The Federal Council set the planning perimeter and technology on 20 December 2024; per the schedule, route design runs 2025-2028, the plan-approval procedure 2028-2031, and construction 2031-2036, followed by dismantling of the old line through 2039. The upgrade aims to unlock currently unused hydropower capacity in Ticino (about one third today). Note: the source's planned completion (construction ending 2036) differs from the list date (2034), so the source-based date was used instead.
